This section assesses the extent to which the selected screening area is exposed to factors that risk releasing sequestered carbon back into the atmosphere. We model these factors under various IPCC Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs).

SSPs are scenarios used in climate science to describe plausible futures for global demography, economics and policy, and how these interact with climate change. They range from SSP1, with low challenges to mitigation and adaptation, to SSP5, a fossil-fuelled high-emissions pathway. Each SSP is paired with a level of radiative forcing (e.g. SSP2-4.5) to generate projections for warming, sea level and precipitation.

For each factor assessed in the Screening Pro Tool, the "Show map layer" drop-down lets you choose which SSP scenario the model outputs are shown under from three choices:

Temperature Extremes

Indicates to what extent a project is exposed to temperature extremes over time using the frequency of warm spell days (TC90p), defined as the percentage of days in a given year where the daily maximum temperature exceeds the 90th percentile of the 1981-2010 historical reference period, projected under three future climate scenarios.

The map shows the frequency of these extremes over time in the selected area.

Flood Risk

This chapter allows you  to assess how exposed a selected area is to future flooding using the frequency of years in which flooding occurs (flood depth greater than 0m) within a rolling 11-year window, 5 years before and after the target year, under three SSP scenarios.

The map displays the frequency by which flooding occurs in the 5 years before and after the target year presented as a percentage of the 11-year window (a value of 100% would reflect an area flooded every year across that period).

Sea Level Rise

Details the project area’s exposure to sea level rise presenting the projected coastal inundation area (ha) relative to a 2025 baseline, under three SSP pathways.

Extreme Weather Events (Wind)

Shows the project’s exposure to future extreme weather events, with a focus on wind. Risk is captured as the number of days in the year on which daily wind speed exceeds the local 98th percentile, relative to a reference period of 1981-2010.

The map shows the days of extreme wind, colour coded by frequency.

Fire Prevalence

Allows you to see the risk of fire a project is exposed to from the historical prevalence of fires in the selected area.

The map shows fire frequency over the period 2021-2025. The average number of fires per year is calculated by summing the number of fires detected in each month and dividing by the number of years in the period. Clicking on a map pixel will show the fires / year for that pixel (under the “Annual burn rate tab”).

Anthropogenic

Assesses the anthropogenic risk of deforestation in the screening area, using historical forest loss trends within the area and a surrounding 10km buffer zone. High deforestation in this zone indicates elevated risk of future forest loss in the absence of sufficient mitigation efforts.
